Full sun; average water. Large, tropical shade tree native to Madagascar. Deciduous in climates that have a dry season or mildly cool winter, but otherwise is evergreen. Typically grows to 30-40ft tall with a broad-spreading, flat-topped, umbrella-like crown. Lacy, feathery, mimosa-like, bipinnately compound leaves to 8-15" long, each having 10-20 pairs of pinnae with further division into 25-35 pairs of smaller pinnules. Showy (3-4”) scarlet-orange flowers in late spring into summer. Each flower has four spreading petals and a larger fifth petal (the banner) which has streaks of yellow and white. Flowers give away to flattened bean-like fruit pods. Plants grown from seed typically do not flower in the first 7-10 years.
