Full sun or shade; regular water. A California native rhizomatous perennial that grows to 1 foot high. Stems root as they grow along the surface, forming an unusual, solid ground cover. It will only spread where the soil is moist, so can be easily contained in a dry land garden. Large, waxy, dull gray-green leaves. White flowers emerge on 1 foot high, slightly cone-shaped spikes in spring thru summer. An excellent plant for water features. It can be planted in the water or along moist edges and will trail down along rock faces or fountain edges. Bark and roots were widely used medicinally by Native Americans. Leaves were utilized medicinally as a poultice to reduce swelling. Tolerant of extreme heat in the desert regions, cold in the higher elevations, as well as coastal conditions. Tolerates alkaline soil, sand, clay, no drainage and seasonal flooding.
